Title: Can governments do it better: Merger mania and hospital outcomes in the English NHS (8)

The Skinny: Report that considers the active policy of government to bring about hospital mergers, which are based on arguements that such consolidations will bring improvements for patients despite little evidence to support this when private sector health care is considered. It looks at the impact of mergers on a large set of outcomes including financial performance, productivity, waiting times and clinical quality and find little evidence that mergers achieved gains other than a reduction in activity. Indeed in reducing competition, mergers may reduce potential improvements in poorly performaing services.

QR Codes are the barcodes displayed on this page and increasingly on the Fade library catalogue, in papers like the Metro and on advertising.  They are quick response codes to make it easier for you to get at the content you need without having to type, and are designed to be used with smartphones and tablets.  The example given in this post will enable you to download a report.

  1. Download any QR code reader to your phone or tablet (there are lots of free ones).
  2. Open up the QR reader on your phone and scan the QR codes in the catalogue or on this page (hover over the title in the catalogue to make the QR codes bigger and easier to scan).
  3. Our codes will either direct you to a location to download electronic items or email the library to borrow a book or may give you some contact details.
  4. No more typing to send us a request, result!

Making sense of this era of change
