The Skinny: Report that considers the active policy of government to bring about hospital mergers, which are based on arguements that such consolidations will bring improvements for patients despite little evidence to support this when private sector health care is considered. It looks at the impact of mergers on a large set of outcomes including financial performance, productivity, waiting times and clinical quality and find little evidence that mergers achieved gains other than a reduction in activity. Indeed in reducing competition, mergers may reduce potential improvements in poorly performaing services.
